Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Quiet Morning

The kids are asleep. No school this morning. Officially, today is, “Fall Break.” I woke up early. I did see Atticus around 5:30am, on his way back to bed after essentially sleepwalking to the bathroom.

First Breakfast (versus 2nd)

Because the kids have the luxury of sleeping in, I thought I’d make something simple for myself … before they are awake and actually ready for breakfast. A pair of boiled eggs. Nothing fancy, but warm eggs in a cool house with a cup of tea, is a wonderful way to start my day.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Aragorn: Gentlemen! We do not stop ’til nightfall.
Pippin: But what about breakfast?
Aragorn: You’ve already had it.
Pippin: We’ve had one, yes. But what about second breakfast?
[Aragorn stares at him, then walks off.]
Merry: Don’t think he knows about second breakfast, Pip.
Pippin: What about elevenses? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper? He knows about them, doesn’t he?
Merry: I wouldn’t count on it.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Today is what I grew up traditionally celebrating as Columbus Day. Now, we are excited to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Which has inspired me to want to have a “reasonably” Cuban dinner tonight. Why? Well, because I drew a loose string between celebrating the original inhabitants of America, with celebrating some of my ancestors. My father was born in Cuba, in the forties. When Castro and his revolutionaries overthrew Batista, most of his family fled the country. Growing up, here in North Carolina, my mom would do all of the cooking, and would sometimes make Cuban food. While she is not Cuban, my mom often tried to recognize my dad’s roots.

Cuban-Inspired Dinner

Tonight’s menu will be pretty traditional:

Cuban inspired dinner to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day
  • White Rice with Cuban Black Beans
  • Ropa Vieja style Pulled Pork
  • Maduros (Fried Sweet Plantains)
